Located on land originally owned by former California Governor Pio Pico in the mid-1880s, Friendly Hills Country Club is a private course situated on 170 acres of rolling terrain. Casey O’Callaghan has consulted with the club for over twenty years. Two of the more significant projects include assisting the club with converting nineteen acres of their irrigated golf course grass area to drought tolerant landscaping and a comprehensive sand bunker renovation project. The drought tolerant landscaping project significantly reduced their irrigation water budget while still keeping the character of the golf course intact and reducing landscape maintenance. The bunker renovation project was able to reduce the overall square footage of the sand bunkers while reshaping the new bunkers to be more aesthetically pleasing and visible. During this process, we increased the strategic significance of the bunkers and improved accessibility for golfers to get in and out of these hazards. Casey’s ongoing work will continue with a comprehensive look at the tee and green complexes.
